Milo is back leading the crew of yet another Descendents album. Three out of the four have been plugging along with their All project with questionable success. Descendents been rather quiet in recent years with their last album being Epitaph's Everything Sucks back in 1996. Almost a decade later we get Cool To Be You and they've switched over to Fat Wreck Chords for this release. They issued the political blast "'Merican" earlier with a look at reasons why people should be proud to be American and reasons that they should be embarrassed. It's a great track and it's included on Cool To Be You, of course. George W. can be thanked for little but one thing he is responsible for is a lot of politically fueled music in the past couple years. If all the musicians who have written songs lambasting his ethics and actions go out and vote, there will be no way the guy can win. I digress. Back to the music of the pop-punk originators. Cool To Be You steers us through 14 songs in true Descendents style. Don't expect any drastic changes here. Milo Aukerman's vocals are just as good as before and the subject matter may not be as humorous as previous albums but the songs are tight. "Blast Off" might be an exception to that statement. "Mass Nerder" was stolen from All's catalog, 1998's album of the same title. Bill Stevenson's drumming is precision making the album tick along nicely. Egerton has some new riffs that he is happy to share with the listener. Don't think of the Descendents as a washed-up band because this music is probably more relevant in today's punk landscape than it was back in the 80s. Welcome back Milo!
