Wiley - Treddin' On Thin Ice
Another hip hop artist making their way over to our shores from England is Wiley, hailing from London, is following the path blazed by fellow Brit Dizzee Rascal. In fact, Wiley and Dizzee are buddies and you will notice that upon first listen. They have a similar style but I found Wiley using a little more old school samples. It sounds like someone gave him a Casio keyboard and is using some of the programs as samples. Don't take it the wrong way though, because it actually works. Treddin' On Thin Ice starts out strong with the upbeat "The Game" with that Casio kind of background and some very apt rapping. The first single is "Wot Do U Call It" and it is indeed one of the best tracks on the album, as people are arguing about what to call this style of music. "It sure ain't garage", let's call it Eski Beat to make Wiley happy. It's true, it's not really garage and it's a little different that typical US rap. Whatever you call it it's taking the world by storm. We'll see if Wiley can follow his buddy in success terms. Wiley has some people helping him out on here but I don't recognize any of the names: Breeze, J2K, Riko, Tinchy Stryder, and Kano. While Dizzee may have been first out of the block with a definitive style, Wiley is a close second with a very cool album that is different in many ways.
