Modern Day Troubadours is an amazing compilation. It's so cohesive in its theme that there is no way it could falter. Most of the artists on this compilation I have heard of but there are a few that I am new too. The new Nettwerk artist David Mead leads off with a track called "Beauty". It sets the bar high with a lush arrangement and a very talented vocalist. It may be aimed a little too much towards an AOR audience but I like it. Another artist I hadn't heard of was one called Griffin House. Griffin has a great story telling style and shows us his style on the amazing "Liberty Line". I look forward to his debut album out later this year. Another one I know little about is Matthew Jay from England. Unfortunately, one of the weaker tracks on the comp. The consistent Sondre Lerche comes in with "Sleep On Needles", a great track from his debut album. Britain's Ed Harcourt provides "She Fell Into My Arms", a fairly upbeat ballad with a focus on piano. Other people included are Sam Roberts, Daniel Lanois, Neil Finn, Jay Farrar, and Ron Sexsmith with a song from his brand new Retriever album. There are two tracks that seem like a peg in a square hole. The first is the most obvious and that is Johnny Cash. Look up top at the title of the album. Modern Day. Great song ("Give My Love To Rose") but it really has no place on the album. Bob Dylan is another one we could argue its inclusion. "One More Cup Of Coffee" is the track here and although a great track, Dylan has had his day in the sun. We could debate Jeff Buckley being on the comp seeing that "Last Goodbye" was released back in 1994. It would have been nice if Nettwerk could have stuck to songwriters of the last decade. Other than that very small complaint, Modern Day Troubadours is a great compilation that sums up a lot of what has been going on in the singer/songwriter world.
