The Moon and Antarctica really brought many fans to the doors of the Modest Mouse fanclub. I was really impressed with the album even though I still have a place in my heart for their heavier Lonesome Crowded West (who can get enough of "Convenient Parking"?). The fact remains that even though Isaac Brock and his alt.rock crew can sell out a show in no time, their name is still not a household rock band. That could actually change with Good News For People Who Love Bad News. This album is probably the most accessible album that Modest Mouse could actually make and how cool would it be if we ended up hearing the jangly guitars of "Float On" or the gentleness of "Blame it on the Tetons" on FM radio. It's not just a couple tracks. Isaac's songwriting has completely turned into something that is top-notch. "Ocean Breathes Salty" is a pop gem with some crazy studio tricks happening keeping it fresh. And while the Mouse has become a little more subdued since it's Epic contract inception the diversity is still there. "Bury Me With It" is a glorious song and probably the heaviest one on the album. It has a jerky course that really reminds you of Brock's background. One of the biggest messages Isaac delivers is on "Bukowski" where he states "God didn't want to be such an asshole" and "who wouldn't want to be such a control freak". He also puts on his best Tom Waits impression on "This Devil's Workday". There is only one iffy song on the album and that is "Dance Hall". Other than that, Good News may be considered Modest Mouse's masterpiece.
