Mind and Mother is the follow-up to Burd Early's Leveler album. Burd Early is basically the solo project of James Angelos. Think of Richard Buckner without as much twang. Maybe Songs: Ohia without as much dark overtones. I found that I really had to be in the mood for Mind and Mother but when I was, this album was held high above others. When I wasn't in the right frame of mind, I found it quite boring. The songs are gentle and peaceful. They really don't require full attention which does make for hard review material. If an album doesn't grab your attention immediately it is hard to focus on. You almost have to pull yourself right into the music and when you do that with Burd Early the rewards are there. This album makes for good headphone music or even a late-night drive by yourself. All the songs have good rhythm going on it even if they are slow. The album is entirely acoustic and sounds as if it could have been recorded in the bedroom. I found "Gale Regale" to be way too slow with not enough action to keep my attention. The rest of the album is good quality bedroom recording. I would guess that fans of Burd Early would be fanatical about his output, whereas new people may not find enough values in his music to warrant repeated listens.
