The first Vines album sounded almost like Nirvana but on Winning Days they stray a little more away from that except for the track "Animal Machine". The band starts out with "Ride", a song that has potential with a great riff but really loses my interest with repetitiveness. It's "Animal Machine" where the Aussie band really hits all Nirvana buttons. But then they lose that comparison with the energetic and melodic "TV Pro", probably my favorite song on the album. I may be looking for comparisons here but I think that "Autumn Shade II" sounds like something that would have come off Alice In Chains' Sap EP but not of the same calibre. "Evil Town" ventures back into the grunge era again. The title track is a more gentle song that shows The Vines with some potential of some original ideas. I have a hard time with the Vines because they are decent musicians but they can't quite seem to find their own sound. They are trapped between grunge and power-pop with some radio friendly rock in for good measure. Winning Days would be a good album if you haven't been listening to the radio in about 20 years. It doesn't quite have the punch that their last album had either. For both reasons it kind of falls flat. You may hear a couple radio singles off of this album but the rest of the album seems like filler to me.
