Even though Piano Magic has been around the better part of a decade I have failed to come across them. They even had a two album stint on 4AD that I failed to notice. I have a feeling that I'm not alone with this sentiment because they are now on an obscure Spanish label called Green UFOs. What we get is a very textured and elegant record. It is as romantic as an indie album can be without crossing over to AOR. While still remaining relatively unknown in the home country of England, they have been making waves in mainland Europe, hence the Spanish record label. We get a nice mix of male and female led songs. The songs are gentle in their delivery evoking a bit of heart-felt sentimentality throughout. The Troubled Sleep of Piano Magic starts out with an amazingly diverse track called "Saint Marie", utilizing a beautiful echo effect on the guitar. Another charming selection is "I Am The Teachers Son", a rather bleak but optimistic song with some fine arrangements lending to a very lush song. This introduction to an older band has proved to be enlightening. The group is capable of writing mellow songs without boring the listener, something that is a rare feat indeed.
