Al Okado, ex-guitarist from Canada's brilliant King Cobb Steelie has a new project under his belt in the form of Microbunny. Dead Stars is his debut and he has recruited the vocal and lyrical talents of fellow Canadian Tamara Williamson. It couldn't be a more perfect fit. The sound is a little along the lines of a trip-hop act, comparable to Lamb or Portishead. It's Williamson's vocals that really make Okado's music come alive. Her voice is up front in the mix so I'm guessing that Al knows that. Microbunny pushes the experimental boundaries of electronica and trip-hop and yet still remain fairly accessible. Some songs get a little vague like "The Drifter" but it's opportunities like this that keep them forging ahead. Okado has a big jazz influence in most of the music but readily in tracks like "Rose-Coloured Glasses". I've heard Willaimson's solo album but I'm thinking that she has found a good thing in Microbunny. It's a very "here-and-now" kind of band. I've heard that their live show is something to behold. If it's anything like a King Cobb Steelie show then you will be in for a treat.
