I have been a Beta Band fan since their 3 EP debut and always thought they were on top of their game. That is until now. I was sent a link to the lead single "Assessment" video and didn't really know what to think. It was really a brilliant video with people running forever on a beach passing off a glowing baton from human era to human era. It was almost too good in that I never really focused on the music. Now I have Heroes and Zeros in my hot little hands I realize that this track may be one of the best songs these guys have ever written. Then I got to "Lion Thief" and the droning harmonies that The Beta Band do so well sound perfected. The guys are so confident in themselves that they took over the production helm, bringing in Neil Godrich to do the mixing. "Easy" begins with a funky line that sounds a bit like it was lifted from a Stevie Wonder track. That's the only similarity as the Beta's provide us with one of the funkiest tracks they have every created. They follow it up with a ballad(?) called "Wonderful", a little quirky but that is their charm now, isn't it? Still haven't sold you? Listen to "Space Battle", one of their best tracks ever. It's fairly gentle but it hits home. "Liquid Bird" is the most rocking track these Brits have ever pulled off too. Just go get this album. There is something for everyone here.
