Encore - Layover
Underground hip hop is alive and well. Case in point, the Bay Area hip hop scene with artists like Encore leading the way. Layover is the long awaited follow-up to his Self-Preservation album. I wasn't overly impressed with Self-Preservation but views can change and Layover is a much stronger album. You probably know my take on skits. I think they are over utilized and become annoying after a couple listens. That is probably the biggest downfall on Layover. Some annoying hip hop fan is bugging Encore wherever he goes. Encore deserves some attention though. His sophomore album delivers everything that his debut was lacking. He's not a fast rapper. Instead, he opts for smooth and steady lyrics with some damn fine samples and beats backing him up. It comes of super-soulful. He doesn't go off on anyone in particular, choosing to let the rhymes and beats speak for themselves. Check out the initial single "Zigga Zigga". It's a hard hitting track with a cool sax sample keeping rhythm. Layover is a strong album that most hip hop fans should appreciate.
