I received this Swarm of the Lotus with no promo materials, no bio, nothing. I had never heard of them before I received When White Becomes Black either so I am writing this rather blindly. Let's start this off by saying that this album is fucking heavy. No, totally heavy. This is the likes of something worthy of being on Revelation, Victory or Equal Vision for that matter. From the liner notes, it looks as if SOTL is a standard four-piece hardcore band: double guitar, bass and drums. They hail from Baltimore, MD and are set to take on the hardcore world by storm. This album is going to get some attention from everyone in the genre. The album is rather lengthy for an intense hardcore album running at just under an hour but it really is good. I found my ears a little sore by the time I had gone through the album twice. How do you pick a track to feature out of this album? One good thing is that no songs suck, they are all intense and don't let up for anything. Guitars grind and the drums are bang on. Pete's vocals are loud and screaming; none of this sing-songy shit for Swarm Of The Lotus. The band can shift speeds with ease, slowing down to a crawl and speeding up to mach 3. Perfect example is "Strength of Inner Eyes" which is a masterpiece. If you are a little bored with a lot of the hardcore bands out there like Converge and Hope Conspiracy (I haven't yet) then you might get off on this album.
