Panurge - Throw Down The Reins
Panurge is a bit of an interesting beast. The group grew out of a scene in Vancouver, BC and consist of Daniel Byrne, Chris Lovell, and John Schubert. Their musical contemporaries consist of the Beta Band (Canada's version) and possibly even Beck. Throw Down The Reins is basically the group's third album and first for Vancouver based Nettwerk Records. Not being versed with their first two album's, it took me a couple of listens to really figure out Panurge but I totally am enjoying what I'm hearing. The group easily blends a lat 60s psychedelic sound with samples and other newer technologies. Really becoming Canada's version of England's Beta Band. Listening to "Land Of Jade" I feel that it would be a welcome addition to Beck's Sea Change. It has so many of the same elements to it. With "Mixed Calvary" they almost hit on a Shins or Essex Green sound. The group is very talented and have a knack for quirky and psychedelic songs. They seem to come quite easily to the band. If you have room for more of a Beta Band or Beck sound then look towards Panurge to fill in the gaps.
