It seems like the world needs more vocalists. I think Ahleuchatistas is about the third straight instrumental rock album I have listened to in the past two days. Either that or vocalists are becoming obsolete. Anyway, On The Culture Industry is a quite an interesting album despite no vocalist. I think the strangest thing for an instrumental band is naming a song. You don't have any lyrics to go by so what sort of naming convention do they use? For instance, some of the songs on Ahleuchatistas album include "Lacerate" (a good title for the song), "Fodder for Defamation", and "Al Jazzera". The music is not as technical as some other similar bands like Tortoise but it is always driving and pushing forward. I know there aren't all that many bands out there that do this kind of music but the one's that are there do it really well. Even look at the group H Chinaski for more proof. This group is a three piece and they manage to make quite loud music that even gets jazzy at times. Shane Perlowin's able guitar playing is really the highlight here, not to take away from what Derek and Sean do. All of the album is cohesive and the songs really fit together nicely. Any fan of instrumental indie rock will fully appreciate Ahleuchatistas (I still don't know how to pronounce their name).
