Centro-Matic has been on my list of bands to investigate but I have never gotten around to it until now. Their albums always show up on the Top Albums lists compiled at yearend. In late 2003 Centro-Matic released an album called Love You Just The Same. Will Johnson, Centro-Matic's prolific front-man, dropped off a ton of songs for that album so of course there were many quality songs left over. This is where Flashes and Cables comes in. The title track is presented here in two formats, the regular one and one called the "Relax/Recline" version. "Infernoesque Grande" is Guided By Voices like you have never heard them. It's got the same sort of lo-fi sound that Pollard and company have perfected over the years. "Guillotines Hung Together" is a great rocking track with a clever title. The EP also includes 4 QuickTime movies for "Given Geography", "Janitorial", "Legion", and "Why They Are...". This served as a great introduction to Centro-Matic. I will definitely head out and check out their back catalog now, starting with Love You Just The Same.
