Jens Lekman is a singer/songwriter in the indie vein of the term from Sweden. Maple Leaves is the first of two EPs he will be releasing this year on Secretly Canadian. Lekman is very crafty when it comes to songwriting. The four songs on Maple Leaves are very diverse and different that what we are used to. The album starts out with some old crackly funk music on "Travelin Man" before Jens starts his gentle Belle and Sebastian style vocals. It's a very sexy song. Then he brings in the gentle piano for the intro into "Voodoo Lake", giving Rufus Wainwright a run for his money. "Bring It On" is the happiest song on Maple Leaves. The happy guitar plucking and upbeat vocals just leave a sunny outlook on things. Then he brings it all together with the quiet "Talked Myself Right Into It". Maple Leaves is a great introduction to an artist that I'm sure we'll be seeing so much more from.
