Well it seems as though Phil Elvrum has stumbled across a band that works for him. He has been involved with a few K Records bands like Old Time Relijun but none have been as successful as The Microphones. This particular album was recorded over three days in Japan and instead of doing all the tried and true songs that fans expected Phil to play, he chose to experiment with some unreleased material. While I don't really think this is the best representation of Phil, it does showcase what an extensive catalog the guy has to work from. He uses a bare minimum of back-up here and in some cases it works really well. The lead-off track "Great Ghosts" is one of the best tracks I have heard from Phil. But there are more non-contenders here than good songs. I would suggest that Live In Japan be for hardcore Microphones fans and that someone just curious about Phil look to either the Glow Pt. 2 or Mount Eerie for a better representation of what he does best.
