Listening to The Thrills for the first time, I imagined them from Orange County or some other California area. To my surprise I discovered that this group is from Dublin, Ireland instead. Lead singer Conor Deasy could easily front similar bands like Beachwood Sparks or the Tyde and no one would be the wiser. That's not to say that these bands are all identical. The Thrills has a lot more pop influences in with their country. But The Thrills incorporate pop and country so well and seamlessly. Listen to "Say It Ain't So" and check out how the only thing even really leaning to the country side of things is the lap steel. The song trucks along quite well but has a overtone of twang. Deasy's vocals aren't twangy at all. Quite the contrary. He could sing in the Beach Boys quite easily. It sounds like Conor wishes he was actually in the USA with so many songs referencing American cities. "Big Sur" is the best track on the album, hands down. "Just Traveling Through", not so great. So Much For The City is a great debut, not perfect but still some great merit points.
