I'm sure by know everyone has heard of the Von Bondies, if not for the music then for the little altercation with their former producer, Jack White from the White Stripes. Pawn Shoppe Heart is the quintet's debut album and it is a fine one at that. All that and Jack White's name is on this album as one of the producers. Strange times. Anyway, do The Von Bondies live up to all the hype? It's a bit of yes and no. Jason Stollsteimer is a great front-man. He is charismatic and has a dynamic vocal range, very similar to that of Jack White. The album starts out with one of my favorite tracks, "No Regrets" that reminds me a little of Rocket From The Crypt only not as rambunctious. The Von Bondies take another page out of the White Stripes book and incorporate a female singer on a track or two ("Not That Social"). Their first single is a strong track entitled "Cmon Cmon". It's decent if not a little monochromatic. Basically you get another garage-rock band with The Von Bondies. They are great musicians but not overly original. Overall, I enjoyed Pawn Shoppe Heart but it didn't really blow me away. One thing's for sure, I will definitely check out their live show. Their live reputation precedes them.
