I missed Scott Kannberg (Spiral Stairs) first album as Preston School of Industry but if it's anything like Monsoon it will be worth picking up. Monsoon is a little bit of everything that people have come to expect from indie music. There is out of key singing that Scott's previous band made oh-so in vogue. There are songs that sound like a mix between Cracker, Frank Black and Pavement. The songs are catchy in a geeky sort of way. I dare you to walk away from "Caught In The Rain" and not have it stuck in your head. That song sounds vaguely like some the Cure may have done. I think it's the guitar in that song, and a couple others, that reminds me of The Cure. There are also a few times when Preston School of Industry sounds a bit like Cracker. Monsoon is nothing groundbreaking but it is something to look towards in times of indie music chaos. The songs are not demanding, just simple pop ditties that really harken back to the day of the "ba ba ba" choruses and sprawling guitar lines. Scott should be proud of Monsoon.
