It's been a while since we have heard post-rock this inspired. Sounds Like Braille are a five piece instrumental rock band that sound like they pretty much worship bands like Slint and Tortoise. One big difference here is that Sounds Like Braille are able to sound somewhat different. Sure, there are times where they sound very similar but in the whole these guys are taking the post-rock thing up a notch. The band consists of David Osterlin (bass), Shawn Covill (guitar), James McCoy (drums/percussion), Dante Kester (6-String bass), and Matt Belanger (drums/percussion). As you can see with two bass players and two drummers/percussionists Sounds Like Braille are a lot about rhythm. They don't have any agenda they keep to, instead they opt for experimentation. Wacky instrumentation like on "...???..." or straight ahead rhythmic noodling like on "When Wings Fail". My favorite track is the somewhat lighter "Triumphant was the trumpeting strumpet". These guys are obviously not after the overnight sensation but the college kids should flock to this album. It should be noted that this is one of three of the new label Contraphonic's releases due this spring. Watch for Ifihadahifi and Lesser Birds of Paradise too.
