I blindly threw in Rocket From The Tombs with no real expectations, thinking that they had pretty much ripped off Rocket From The Crypt's name. First time through I was like, what the hell is this? Then I looked at the tear sheet that came with the album and then realized that this band was originally around about 30 years ago. And the bands that were spawned from RFTT were the more successful acts: Pere Ubu and The Dead Boys. Two very extremes but influential bands just the same. Well, they all have to start somewhere and this album reminds us of where these two bands started out. Rather than release a remaster or something similar, the group actually decided to get back together to re-record some of their favorite songs, hence the Rocket Redux title. If a band today came out of the gates with something like this, I would really turn a blind eye but I had to stop and check this one out. The album starts of with a really uninspired track called 'Frustration' but picks up right away with 'So Cold'. They have a bit of a blues vein to them but raw just the same. You can also hear "Life Stinks" and "30 Seconds Over Tokyo" which were both recorded later by Pere Ubu. Definitely not an essential album but if you are curious about these two groups' past then look no further than here.
