Green Day - 1,039/smoothed Out Slappy Hours
Listening to 1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours brings back a flood of memories. I was so into Green Day back around this time. I had a friend who was going to college at the time and his roommate insisted he was the drummer for this band called Green Day. Little did he know that I happened to own this album and knew that they were California based. It was always a good argument whenever a party was thrown. I also was one of the 200 or so people who saw Green Day play at a little club called the Republik here in Calgary. Anyway, about the music on this compilation/album. The catchiness of Green Day was totally apparent from the get go. When Billy Joe gives us his all on "At The Library" you know you are in for a treat. I know that even Green Day never anticipated being in regular rotation on MTV or Much Music let alone have a multi-platinum album coming up. In fact, when they were playing the show at the Republik, they were begging for a floor to sleep on. They even threw a bone to one of their idols, Operation Ivy by recording their brilliant "Knowledge". Sing along with Billy. This is a great re-release and quite an important album when you consider that Green Day was seminal in bringing so-cal punk to the mainstream. There are a few extras on the CD-ROM portion of the disc but nothing to get too excited about.
