Still Life is band that has been around for over a decade. I haven't had the opportunity to listen to them before now but I have heard reference to them in more than one emo/hardcore review. Now I'm not sure if The Incredible Sinking Feeling is more emo or more along the lines of a post-rock band. There are some pretty out there soundscapes that Still Life is creating here. They kind of do the soft/loud thing here but more soft and gentle than loud and angry. Take for instance the opening track, "Wishful Thinking (Slowly Sinking)". It starts of so gentle with quiet and low key vocals and it builds up into a louder song but the vocals stay somewhat the same. It has been a long 4 years since Still Life's last album so things in their camp must have changed a little. "Breathe" takes on a heavier overtone with distorted guitars and it breaks down in the middle to make room for a scream. Their sound reminds me a bit of Hum, a sadly underrated pop/punk band. But it's tracks like "Pumpkinseed Teeth, Seaweed Antlers" that leaves me scratching my head. They are reaching for a Tom Waits thing but fail miserably. So while Still Life doesn't come highly recommended by this reviewer, I can see some people adoring what they have done here.
