I was pretty happy to hear that a Guided By Voices greatest hits album was coming out. The reason for this is that I (and I assume quite a few other fans) have not been entirely happy with complete albums. Sure, there are always some killer songs on pretty much every GBV album and some albums are almost there but there always seems to be a little filler in there. It's like Robert thought we wouldn't notice. But the same year they release their compilation, they have also released what could be considered the album of their career. Earthquake Glue is a solid effort that Pollard and crew should be totally satisfied with. Dramatic songs like "Secret Star" and dark blues tracks like "Dirty Water" give Earthquake Glue a diversity that has rarely been found in a GBV album. Tracks in the classic GBV vein like "The Best Of Jill Hives" really remind you of where these guys have come from. I think this album would have gone over much bigger if it had come from a brand new unknown band. People now have pretty much given up on Pollard's group but as we see with Earthquake Glue, don't give up too early.
