Radiogram - All The Way Home
Radiogram is Canada's answer to the quiet americana of Will Oldham. Ken Beattie and his mopey cowboys captured many indie fans with their debut, Unbetween and with All The Way Home they manage to beat the sophomore slump. Radiogram albums and songs aren't readily apparent. This may account for the small (but growing) fanbase that the Vancouver group has. You need patience for this music and whenever people hear the words alt.country or Americana people start automatically thinking of Uncle Tupelo or Wilco. Seeing that this genre has very little to offer, a band like Radiogram has free reign to do what they want to do. And the harmonies that they pull off are amazing. Just have a listen to the album closer "Not Here" for a great example of this. "Not Here" is one of the best songs on the album. I quite often hear similarities between Radiogram and the Skydiggers or the Cash Brothers. I'm sure that this is just coincidence but the comparison is reasonable with Beattie's twangy voice. In all honesty, if you haven't got yourself glued to All The Way Home after your third listen, you should give up. This is a great Canadian album that Radiogram should be very proud of.
