I've always liked Tori Amos from the first time I saw her play the piano live. The amount of soul that she puts into her music makes it come alive. I have strayed a little over the past couple albums, only picking them up at used CD stores instead of picking them up the day they come out. Scarlet's Walk was basically in the same position but it is a return to form for Tori. She has returned to the days of Under The Pink and is injecting her heart and soul into her music again. This could be the label switch, from Atlantic to Epic or her living out the theme of the album. Tori headed out on a trip to all the US states and was influenced by different factors throughout her trip. The character, Scarlet, could be considered Amos herself. So, while not really a concept album, it does have a theme running through it. That may be what brought Tori the ability to create some of her best music to date. The first half of the album is the better half, as the second seems to dwindle a little bit. The second half is still better than most songs on the last couple of albums. It does seem, however, that Tori's heart is back into her music and she has been inspired once again.

I never really managed to get close to the music of Tori Amos and "Scarlet's Walk" typifies the reasons why. Pianist, songwriter and vocalist, Amos fills a niche which has the capacity to appeal directly to me, a kind of American Beth Orton if you like. But for some reason, I am not moved by it. It's not that there is anything intrinsically bad about her music, it's just that I think it should offer me more than it actually does.

"Scarlet's Walk" is, from my perspective, a disappointing album. On the one hand you could view this as the sort of ridiculous pop music which tries to be in with the teenage crowd and will appeal directly to MTV. But it is deeper and more sincere than that. Then again, it is not something which conveys with any degree of success the message which it tries to. I can't help but think that Tori Amos had run out of things to say, or at least run out of ways to express those things in musical terms.

One problem is that there are 18 tracks on this album. Now that is an hell of a lot for a concept album (of sorts) which this is. As a result, the album seems to drag, especially as it lacks any truly stand out tracks. "A Sorta Fairytale" comes closest to that, but even it fails to rouse me to any degree of enthusiasm. And for an album about crossing America, this is too long indeed. After all, the interesting bits are on the coasts and a lot of the interior is relatively flat and bland. Pretty much the way this album has panned out in many ways. It is like reading an overly long novel without finding enough interesting in it to keep you reading. It is as if there are characters and chapters in here, but it not interesting enough to make me want to stick around and see what happens in the end.

If I were a Tori Amos fan I would probably be able to find enough in here to keep me interested and keep me wanting more. But if I was seeking to explore her work, I would not start here. Okay, it is an improvement on the some of the techno influenced stuff which preceded it, but it is not an album which is going to hold the attention of any but the most dedicated. Too long, too bland and with an awful lot of filler.
