The Matthew Show is the case of one guy tired of trying to please others with his music. Texas came about from Matthew wanting to "make an album I liked". The result is a pretty decent album for a self-released / self-produced effort. The production values are really top-notch and Matthew's songwriting is fairly impressive. Usually on projects like this, one of the two are missing. Song selection, on the other hand, could have been a little better. I didn't care for the spoken word track, "Office Suite Part II" (the first one has a cool feel to it) and the two instrumentals, "Theme From Texas" and "Reprise". There just isn't enough to them to warrant them taking space on the album. Other than that, the rest of the album is great. The first true song on Texas is "Bring Me Safely Down", which is a self-confessional. "Old Enough" starts out fairly mellow and gets rocking pretty decent. My favorite line comes from a song ("Loneliest Boy In Toyland") that could've been penned by Dan Bern: "You like talking, you won't quit. Like Bob Dylan I don't give a shit". Matthew seems like he is a little depressed but as I always say, depression leads to great song material.
