Iron Sharpens Iron is the debut long-player from the Colorado based The Procussions, a cutting edge hip-hop collective. Yeah, you read that right, Colorado. Not a hotbed for hip hop but you have to hear The Procussions. This group melds old school and new school perfectly. There are times when I can hear so many influences as diverse as Public Enemy, Jurassic 5, De La Soul, and so many other artists. The great thing about Procussions is that they have a great knack for a beat and lyrical skills to boast about. I found myself bopping along to the entire album, something I haven't been able to do much this past year (cept Nappy Roots and a couple others). The beats are similar throughout the album with a boom-bap sound but it's enough to keep it fresh. It also helps that they utilize some pretty fresh samples throughout the album. Don't look for goofy skits inbetween songs because The Procussions just get down to business. They wanted to fit as much music on this album as possible. There were originally six members but the serious ones stuck to it and the weeded the group down to 3 key members; Stro The 89th Key (MC and Producer), J. Medeiros (MC), and Resonant (MC). They are all able MC's sharing duties and keeping the album interesting. Seek this album out if you were disappointed in underground hip hop in 2003.
