It seems like Outkast out media-ed every other hip hop artist in 2003 which really is too bad because there were other decent albums out there including Wooden Leather. Nappy Roots follow up their platinum selling Atlantic debut, Watermelon, Chicken and Gritz with an album that stretches the group out a little more. Where a group like Outkast sounds a little scattered taken in one dose, Wooden Leather is a cohesive album that fits together very nicely. These southern fried rappers from Kentucky have rhymes that Jay-Z would be proud of. The album kicks off on the right foot with the funky "Good God Almighty". It's funky and yet smooth like butta. You can't deny how smooth a track like "Push On (ft. Anthony Hamilton)" is. One of my favorite things about Wooden Leather is that Nappy Roots don't feel it necessary to throw skits between each track. There is an intro into the album as well as an outro but that's about it. They are all about the music and even though the album is over an hour long, you don't feel as though it's time wasted. Nappy Roots is not a mainstream band but with a multi-platinum album behind them, people are starting to pay attention to their skills. And so they should. Wooden Leather has no filler. It's a solid effort from beginning to end. Get it!
