Searching For The Elvis Knob is one of the better indie releases that have crossed my desk in the past few months. It is not a new album but it is the first time I have heard of the Majestic Twelve. Basically, this is the vehicle for songwriter Kenyata Sullivan to get his music out to the masses. He has found himself a very impressive band and released an impressive album. Kenyata is a definite DIY guy, having his last band get offers from every major label and turning them down, opting instead to give his music away. It was Alex Alexander who tracked him down in 2002 to start this project and the rest, as the say, is history. The album starts out with a track called "Soylent Green" and it gives the impression that we are in for a Wilco-type experience with Lou Reed singing but when we move on to "I Don't Have A Job" Kenyata starts spitting out lyrics similar to that of REM's "It's The End of The World As We Know it" and he sounds like it's completely effortless. "Never Disappear" is one of my favorite tracks on the album. It starts out with a chiming guitar before Kenyata joins in and then the rest of the band folds in making a very lovely song. "Sweet Patience" is along the lines of a torch song with piano accompaniment. It is gentle and soothing being a little mysterious at the same time. The music of Majestic Twelve is mostly acoustic but it gets rocking on several occasions. Searching For The Elvis Knob is a great debut.
