Howie Day received quite a bit of acclaim for his debut album, Australia and of course when that happens, everyone fears their sophomore album. Case in point, fellow songwriter, Pete Yorn crashed and burned on his sophomore. Howie Day seems like a little more of a mature songwriter than Yorn though, even if age doesn't fit into the equation. (He's only 22) Howie writes about many heartfelt matters and does it in a way that keeps the listener glued for the next line. David Gray is one of the songwriters that does this well but Howie's vocals and arrangements tend to be a little more upbeat (for the most part). His music is nothing all that special but there is indeed something about it that makes it far from drab. It is the fine studio work of his band, I'm sure, that helps with this. They show how to make a fine, gentle song and make it into something full and lush. They utilize an orchestra on occasion as well as piano, making some fingers point out that he is sounding like Travis. Well, if you are like me, you want a replacement for that last Travis album and Stop All The World Now should do that quite nicely. Howie doesn't have anything as instantly hummable like "Sing Sing Sing" but it is a very solid album.
