Firewater - Songs We Should Have Written
Firewater is one of those brilliant indie bands that other indie bands look up to for inspiration. What makes/made Firewater tick? Well, on Songs We Should Have Written Tod A and his crew attempt an album full of their favorite songs, old and older. The song line-up is fairly eclectic but not to far fetched for what you would think inspired Tod and the rest of Firewater. The album starts off with "The Beat Goes On" and they nail it with the help of Britta Phillips of Luna. "Diamonds and Gold" by Tom Waits is a very likely candidate for Firewater. Tod sounds so at home with this song that I would suggest that Firewater think about doing an entire set of Waits songs (but it's been done). One surprise is the more obscure Beatles pick that they chose. "Hey Bulldog" from the Yellow Submarine album, but Firewater does it justice too with a lot more distortion and Tod A's smokey vocals. While they had Britta in the studio, they convinced her to do another Lee Hazlewood track, "Some Velvet Morning". They do another bang up job. According to the track by track bio that I received with Songs, Tod A's favorite all time song is "Is That All There Is", made famous by Peggy Lee. They have fun with that song making it a fairly dark rendition. Some of the other tracks Firewater chose for this album include "Folsom Prison Blues", "This Little Light Of Mine", "Paint It Black" and an awesome cover of Robyn Hitchcock's "I Often Dream Of Trains". This album is as essential as any other original Firewater album. I totally enjoyed it.
