Manishevitz has been around for a little while now but City Life happens to be the first disc that I have managed to hear. They are from Chicago and have ties with all the great bands and artists that city has to offer. In pretty much everything I've read about Adam Busch (lead vocals) compares his vocals to Bryan Ferry but I fail to see that. Sure, he sings with a bit of a British accent but where Bryan Ferry has a smooth, almost romantic style, Adam's style is a lot jerkier and more along the links of Mark E Smith or even Jarvis Cocker. The band reminds me a lot of Television only watered down a little. A more contemporary Television if you will. It took me a couple listens to fully appreciate what Manishevitz is trying to do here. And from what I've read, this is the first album where the whole band was involved in the making and writing of the songs. It is definitely Busch's vocals that make this band stand apart. The album includes performances from the Chicago elite like Califone, Edith Frost's band, Central Falls and so many more to mention here. I can't pull out any favorite songs because the all seem to befit each other. Check this out if you come across it.
