There are sometimes when you actually have to give major labels credit where credit is due. Out of all the hardcore bands out there, none is arguably more deserving of a major label deal than this Connecticut foursome. While we waited almost 5 years for Hatebreed's first major label record, last year's aptly titled Perseverance, they have now provided their slobbering fans with a follow-up already. Rise of Brutality picks up exactly where Perseverance left off, grinding up their fans into a bloody pulp. They scream out lyrics like "A Lesson Lived Is A Lesson Learned" and they totally mean every line. They have a bit of old school Biohazard and Pro-Pain in their sound with their machine gun styled hardcore, but I get the feeling that we are indebted to Hatebreed for some of the heaviest and most straightforward hardcore metal that we have heard for a long, long time. It really has been a long time since we have heard anything quite as intense as Hatebreed and I think Universal (or a very influential A&R rep) saw the same thing in them. Most of their songs have a groove going to them that you could almost dance to it, but I'm sure fans would rather stir up the pit instead. One of the best tracks on Rise of Brutality is the pummeling "Facing What Consumes You". My head ached after the onslaught of that one. All in all, this is one of the best metal releases out this year. Let's hope that they sell enough to keep the Universal deal alive. One of the heaviest and most listenable heavy bands every.
