This is kind of a neat project. Begin Live Transmission is basically just like a live broadcast of Washington, DC's Radio CPR (Community Powered Radio). The album is complete with interviews and excerpts between songs and a diverse selection of songs from local area musicians. Of course this is something that DC's Dischord Records jumped on and helped out by releasing this diverse collection. There are actually a couple of Dischord acts on the album like El Vez and El Guapo but for the most part, these artists are fairly obscure. The genre's float from a bit of a world beat feel ("So Excited" - Optimistic Tribe) to artsy. There is even a hip-hop track called "Enuff" from a very apt rapper called Head-Roc. Good old punk rock is here to in tracks like "Do" by Machetres. Experimental electronica is represented by "Fingers", a track by EBSK. There are some tracks that really don't deserve to go much further than this compilation like the spastic and out of tune "Fifi" by RaRaFre+Am. Accordions need to be used very carefully. Another one that could have been left off is the annoying "Doubletree" by Et At It. I should also mention that proceeds from this CD are to go towards Radio CPR. It's not very often you can relisten to a radio broadcast over and over. As most indie radio stations, this compilation is a bit of a hit and miss affair. If you have a vested interest in Radio CPR, by all means, support them by buying this album.
