Iggy's career has been long and somewhat convoluted. Of course everyone respects Iggy for his early contributions with The Stooges but as of late, his output as strayed from the autobiographical disappointment of Avenue B to the rather impressive American Caesar. So with that being said, every time I approach a new Iggy Pop album I reserve my judgment for after the entire listen is complete. Skull Ring left a funny taste in my mouth. There are some killer tracks on the album but some songs that just make me wonder what hell Iggy was thinking. Look to the last half of the album for tracks like "Motor Inn" and "Inferiority Complex" (where Pop uses 'inferior' and 'but not a bore' as a rhyming couplet) for some of the more disappointing moments. There was one very amazing moment where Iggy and Peaches do a duet with her "Rock Show". It's a moment that leaves me thinking there is still some life left in this old punker. You may have heard about his reunion with the Stooges. There are four songs on Skull Ring including the title track done with the Stooges. They seem a little lackluster as well, almost as if they are just going through the motions. A bit of a surprise for me was the tracks that he did with Green Day, "Private Hell" and "Supermarket". These were the best songs on Skull Ring. As an entire package, Skull Ring leaves you scratching your head. But there are some ample highlights that warrant Iggy another chance. We need less "Superbabes" though.
