I'm not a huge soul/R&B fan but Erykah Badu has something groovy about her music that I just can't resist. With Worldwide Underground I am left thinking of the vibe that groups like Parliament were only capable of. Quite impressive actually. Tracks like "I want you" and "The Grind" are some of the best soul/hip-hop tracks ever. The latter of the two features Dead Prez but in a soulful sort of way. Other guests on this "EP" include the talented Zap Mama, Lenny Kravitz, the legendary Roy Hargrove (on "Think Twice") and the ever popular Queen Latifah ("Love Of My Life Worldwide"). The album starts out gently with a nod towards where Erykah is heading. The first actual song on the album is "Bump It" with Zap Mama and Karon Wheeler. It's a smooth groove that keeps you wanting more. Worldwide Underground is a perfect album for a nice candlelight dinner. Never getting to wild and crazy, Badu sticks to what she does best, smooth grooves with a little hip-hop inflection at times. Even though this is slated as an EP, it's lengthy enough to tide us over until her next full-length.
