Speed Graphic marks the first of three EPs that Ben Folds fans can expect this year. Ben's plans are to draw a couple of songs from each of these discs plus a couple more for his full-length release expected early next year. Speed Graphic consists of five really impressive solo piano ditties, the best of them being "Give Judy My Notice". It really shines and puts Ben back in the fore-front of the singer/songwriter realm where he deserves to be. There are more pop tendencies creeping, along the lines of the Ben Folds Five days but with a little more heart. The EP kicks off with the building up of "In Between Days", a track that puts the piano front and center. As I've already stated, Judy is my favorite track on Speed Graphic. It is a classic ballad in every sense. It blows away any Elton John tracks of the same nature. I'd like to see Elton cover this one though. "Protection" kicks in a little more with a bopping back-beat. I can't help but think of Snoopy when I listen to "Dog" though, with Ben's Schroeder-ish piano playing. He leaves us with the super gentle "Wandering", until the next EP hits our mailboxes. Oh yeah, these EPs are only available from his website or iTunes downloads. Get a sneak peak of what's going to be on his next full-length.
