The boys from Fighting Jacks decided to change up their sound a bit. They were previously in a band called Freeto Boat that focused on ska-punk music. Fighting Jacks makes a move for the pop-punk category and does a fine job for their debut. The rock sound that they choose to go with may fall under the emo umbrella but that is left up to fans to decide. The music is fairly accessible, sounding like they are striving for a radio hit, and not a bad thing. Some tracks like "Year Of The Dead" are ready to be plunked down on radio play. The issue at hand is more to do with the amount of bands that are ready to be on radio. This leaves bands like Fighting Jacks out to dry. While the Fighting Jacks sound like a burgeoning force on the warpath, they end up sounding like nothing you haven't heard before. My advice to the band would be to strive for hooks and something different enough to garner attention. This sort of thing has been overdone. You have to reach out for that space where you don't have anyone else to worry about. The Dying Art Of Life shows that you have the capability. Now you just need to execute. If any of this is enough to make you think that you might like Fighting Jacks, by all means, check them out. I'm sure they will adopt a legion of fans with this album. But in order to succeed, they might have to switch it up a bit.
