Buck 65 - Talkin' Honky Blues
His mother knows him as Richard Terfry but Buck 65 is a name that is creeping not only across Canada but throughout the world as an up-and-coming hip hop hero. Talkin' Honky Blues is the latest effort from this Nova Scotian. While a bit of departure for Buck 65, this album maintains one foot in the hip hop style that he has carved out. He is definitely Canada's answer to Cex. He has taken to rapping about a particular river with tracks from 'Riverbed Pt 1' all the way to 'Riverbed Pt 7'. Each one of the river parts is significantly different with only the names in common. Instead of placing his roots in the ghetto, Buck 65 takes on the role of a roving storyteller, a perfect fit for what he does. Basically, it's rap for people heading to the highway. I even caught a little pedal steel in "Wicked and Weird". "Riverbed Pt 1" sounds like it's from a spaghetti western, oh, but add some rhyming on top of it. Somehow Buck tracked down Alvin and the Chipmunks to back him up on "Protest". My favorite track on Honky is "463" with his matter of fact style he utilizes. Buck 65 may never become a household name like Eminem but underground Hip Hop enthusiasts will eat this shit up. People may mistake Buck 65 for just a novelty act but he actually knows what he is doing and he does it well.
