Where have I been? The Wisdom Of Harry has been signed to Matador since 1999 and has already released 2 albums. Torch Division is Pete Astor's, the force behind The Wisdom Of Harry, third album. Torch Division is a delightful album. It's charm is something that grows with repeat listening. It has elements of some of the best alt.rock bands out there. I'm thinking of a Beta Band with a little more Tom Waits influence. In other-words, very similar to that of Mark Linkous' Sparklehorse. You can tell that Pete Astor is a folky at heart but very into experimenting with his music. He is understated at the best of times, with his vocals reminding me a bit of Kurt Wagner of Lambchop. The music is very inventive with samples adhered to actual instrumentation. The group is one that doesn't take to hitting the listener with a large sound, instead, opting for the quieter approach. I will definitely make my way back to their last critically acclaimed album and check it out. An inventive band that sounds unique.
