A new Paul Van Dyk album is always something to look forward to. I, myself, am not a raver, nor do I ever claim to be but I find the type of music that gets played at these events to be soothing and calming and easy to work to. Paul Van Dyk has been forging the way for may dance culture DJs and everyone always looks to him for direction and what's "New" and upcoming in the DJ world. Reflections is just that. He is keeping a foot in what he does best, dance music, while trying to stretch out into a new realm. Each album that he puts out, he does this a little more and as a result, is dictating the way dance music is heading. The album starts out with the instrumental "Crush", a track that builds up nicely and ends up with a huge driving beat to it. "Time Of Our Lives" follows that up nicely with the first vocal track on the album. Vocals provided by Vega4. One very disappointing track was "Nothing By You". It sounds so generic, unusual for Paul. Instead, concentrate on "Knowledge" featuring Atomek Dog. This is one of the most forward thinking songs on the album. Van Dyk needs to focus more on this sort of thing if he wants to break out of the stereotype of a trance DJ. This song is intense and fun. While Reflections isn't the most consistent album we have seen from Paul, there are some really interesting highlights that warrant it a higher rating and as always, those songs will, in the end, result in a bit of a shift in dance music.
