54-40 - Radio Love Songs: The Singles Collection
I'm sure other countries have bands like 54-40 and Tragically Hip. Those bands that are huge, multi-platinum artists in their own country and yet are relatively unknown outside the country borders. I know Australia and New Zealand have their share but it's Canada where I'm from and it's Canadian artists that I'm most familiar. 54-40 has been around for what seems like eons (actually, I think they just celebrated their 20th anniversary). To celebrate, they (or more likely Sony Music) decided to release a fairly comprehensive collection of singles. Previous to this, Sweeter Things was the album to have but that was so many years old and the band continues to have at least one or two radio hits ever year that it was time for an update. That's just what we get with Radio Love Songs. The compilation takes from their earlier Reprise days and intersperses them with their more recent Columbia/Sony hits. The tracking on the album is nice, mixing the two generations but one thing that is missing is some good liner notes. I'm sure that 54-40 could have found a somewhat famous blushing fan to fill up a couple of pages of them reminiscing about the band. Some hits to note are "I Go Blind", "Baby Ran", "One Day In Your Life", "Crossing A Canyon", "Ocean Pearl", "She-La", "Nice To Love You", and a great reworking of the classic "One Gun". Bottom line on this one, it's a great collection of songs from one of Canada's longest running rock bands. Good for those people who have only heard the radio singles and love what they hear.
