Mush is a total grassroots label. They got their start distributing 3 EPs in plain black sleeves to US and European markets and everyone took note of the quality of these releases. They ended up with articles in XLR8R and Muzik and received a licensing deal with Compost. In 1999 Mush started releasing full-length albums to critical acclaim. Their roster is made up of forward thinking hip-hop and electronica artists that are ahead of their time. This compilation features the labels first four years, with a track from each of their releases. Jazz plays a big part in the Mush sound but you would still consider these artists contemporary in their delivery. Boom Bip and DJ Osiris deliver a track called "Voodoo Science" that is a beautiful and funky little jazz ditty. You may have already heard of Clouddead. He has more recently been recording for Ninja Tune offshoot, Big Dada. There is a track called "Bike" from Clouddead here. The music is fairly low-key, even with the diversity of artists involved. On "The Spoon Song" by Nickodemus and Jay B. we even get treated to a bit of a world beat flavor. Mush has never really held back and is willing to go with anything that they deem as good music. Mush Filmstrip (Frame 1) is for the more eclectic music lover out there. It's a fine example of what the underground hip-hop world is up to.
