Surrounded is a gentle affair. Marten Rydell (vocals, guitar) and Marcus Knutsson (guitar) were the instigators in Surrounded, bringing in "Emil Petersson, Fredrik Solfors and Jesper Petersson. Together they bring a light, atmospheric rock sound to your doorstep via Deep Elm. They have a lot in common with Iron and Wine but even more lush and expansive. Safety In Numbers goal is to take the listener away from reality for a moment. Rydell's voice sounds a little like Damien Jurado but a little more subdued. In the end, Surrounded have created quite an original album here. They aren't wacked out, creating music that only the hardcore fans understand. Instead, they look for music that is compelling, even though it is mellow and sprawling. Something that only people like Mark Linkous know about. This Swedish pop group should appeal to more than just the emo fans of Deep Elm. Surrounded reach out far beyond that genre into something much more lush and beautiful. The album is a little depressing over time but I think that is the whole purpose that Surrounded have. I wouldn't be surprised to see Safety In Numbers end up on a few 2003 best of lists later on this year.
