The Besnard Lakes is a band that has been plagued with turmoil ever since it's inception. The Montreal group got together in 2000 and played a few shows. Everyone left the band for various reasons leaving husband and wife team, Olga and Jace on their own. The two of them decided to drop the live act and just dive into the studio to throw some of their ideas on tape. Volume 1 is the result of those sessions, recorded at Breakglass Inc in Montreal. The album sounds surprisingly thick considering that there are only two musicians working on it, but that is the beauty of the studio and having multiple tracks available to you. The music that Olga and Jace have come up with on their Besnard Lakes debut is very original. It sounds like a wall of sound at times, and at others, just a whisper. The music is diverse and beautiful with much thought going into the arrangements of the various songs. The music could easily be the soundtrack for a David Lynch movie, especially the opener "Skyscraper Girls". My favorite track is the closing "Life Rarely Begins With Tungsten Film #1". At some points the band really rocks out but in general, Besnard Lakes is fairly subdued. Volume 1 is an adventurous listen and one that I think many will enjoy.
