A who's who of the electronica/dance/IDM scene appear on this soundtrack to the British movie 'The Last Minute.' The subtitle 'Don't waste time or it will waste you,' encapsulates the dark, urgent mood. Amon Tobin presents some fresh drum-and-bass atmospherics in the title track, 'The Last Minute'. El-P's 'Deep Space 9mm' from last year's 'Fantastic Damage' is here, with the memorable lyric 'Right here holding my nuts', although since this is a gangster movie, the 'Right here hiding from guns' lyric might be what they actually use in the film. Japan's mega-huge Mad Capsule Markets kick out a gem with the Underworld-meets-Nine Inch Nails 'Tribe: Razorface Remix,' which makes me really want to hear more from these guys. Speaking of Underworld and their ilk, fellow Trainspotting alumni Leftfield are here too, with the downtempo 'Song Of Life' which predates that seminal movie by three years, and the swaggering hip-hop 'Dusted' featuring a Roots Manuva rap. But the mood fits, as do the two old tracks by Aphex Twin, from the 'Selected Ambient Works' era. (Did the producers run out of money to license newer stuff, or did they just choose what worked with the film?) 'Livingston Buzz' by Radio Zumbido is a meld of tribal South American drums and urban beats that complements the bachelor-pad slide guitar of 'Fly Hawaii' by Luke Vibert and BJ Cole. Spoken-word excerpts from the movie act as transitions - mean-sounding London gangsters and violent sound effects - which adds to the coherence. Ironically, the biggest fans of the artists featured here might be put off by the number of older tracks, but for anyone else it's a good hour of beats and bass, whether you've seen the movie or not.
