Let's get this out of the way to start: Nortec stands for norteno techno and the Nortec Collective is a group of musicians, graphic artists, architects, fashion designers, remixers and producers. So with that being said, what is Nortec all about? It's a fusion of the hottest techno beats around influenced by the Tijuana area of Mexico. It's hot stuff and one listen to a track such as Plankton Man's "Elemento N" will show what sort of creativity is involved. It is a fairly fast paced track with Mexican trumpets punctuating in the background. Some of the Nortec tracks are very laid back and loungy while others are in your face big beat tracks. It makes for a very compelling listen. It could only have happened in a place like Tijuana where Techno is melded with the Tex-Mex sounds so seamlessly. This is an essential listen for anyone who cares about the future of music.
