On Pepe Deluxe's sophomore album, Beatitude, the duo of James Spectrum and JA-Jazz (DJ Slow has left the mix) seem to have refined what they were trying to do on Super Sound. They have moved away slightly from the bigger beat sound of their debut and opted for a more experimental The sound that they have created sounds like something along the lines of Beck mating with DJ Shadow. Sometimes I think of Beatitude more as a mixed album containing fun funky tracks like "Salami Fever" right alongside the mellow but luscious "Lying Peacefully". The track "Real Simple" sounds a little like a G. Love and Special Sauce track to go even further down this path. But, I guess that's what happens when you have up to 40 artists helping out on 19 tracks. "Salami Fever" is a hot track that is as funky as George Clinton at Carnegie Hall. But as I said above, Beatitude is not all about big beat; there is a nice variety here that will make this a favorite martini bar album for the rest of the year. Whether you know it or not, you have heard Pepe Deluxe in the Levi's Twisted Jeans campaign. They were commissioned by Levi's for that campaign and it ended up being a very successful campaign. So if you are "Ready to move out in style? Are you ready for all the luxury one big swinging world can offer? Then Go-go-go!" buy this album. It is an improvement on a solid debut.
