Tomahawk - Mit Gas

This is the Mike Patton that I remember. I know there were a lot of rabid Faith No More fans and I probably would include myself in that category. There is no person more prolific than Mike Patton for putting out music now and it seems as though Tomahawk is currently his most accessible project. They laid down the law with the Tomahawk debut album but Mit Gas seems to have self-realized what Patton was reaching for (like that's ever really going to happen). The album kicks off with a powerful track called "Birdsong" that gives you an idea what to expect from Mit Gas. For those unfamiliar with Tomahawk, the band fleshes out with Duane Denison (Jesus Lizard, Hank Williams III), John Stanier (Helmet), and Kevin Rutmanis (Patton's labelmates the Melvins). Now when you hit track two, "Rape This Day", you think you really are back in latter day Faith No More. With the on edge guitar and Patton's snarl, breaking into a full on orgy in the middle, Faith No More fans will be content knowing that Mike was not done with ideas he started in that band. Don't worry, there are still songs that are almost unlistenable like "Aktion F1413" (or a portion there of). This will keep the fans of his work on John Zorn's label happy. "Captain Midnight" and "Natural Disaster" find Mike in true singing form, something you don't see everyday, the latter being partially sung in Spanish. Tomahawk might just be a way for Mike Patton's Ipecac label to make some money to keep putting out Melvins' releases but I'll take it over any of the radio crap out there.
